As a language teacher, you might often wonder how to get better and make learning a new language easier for students. There are many methods, tips and tricks that you can apply. When it comes to the method of teaching, a blend of both deductive method and inductive method of teaching turns out to be the best choice.

Being a language teacher is a little different experience from being any other subject teacher. You open up perspectives and widen horizons, allowing your students to travel the world, learn about diverse cultures, and engage in discourse with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Your students might fall in love with the language or the culture and adapt to it as in job, relationship or just learning more languages.

To help you out with this, here are some tips on teaching a new language to students.

  • Pre-Plan Everything

In any language class, the organisation is crucial. It strengthens the teacher’s subject-matter authority and gives students confidence in understanding what is expected of them in each class. However, the organisation includes more than just a class schedule. It covers how your classroom will be set up, where students will sit, how you will interact with them, and how they will interact with each other. Whether you teach online or take traditional classes, planning out everything prior is important.

  • Maximise Language Exposure

When interacting with the students, maximise the use of the new language. Start with simple classroom commands because initially, it would be tough for the students to comprehend tough words and answer you back in the same language. You can encourage students to use the language for asking for permission like “May I come in”, or simply greet each other. The more exposure to the language, the more familiar the students will be with it.

  • Create A Positive Learning Environment

When learning a language, students are bound to make mistakes. As a teacher, you must create a safe classroom for the students so that they do not hesitate to make mistakes and ask questions. Whatever your favourite ways are, if your students are to progress, they need a space free of judgement and safe enough to make any mistakes, knowing that they will only be recognised as opportunities to improve.

  • Go Beyond Textbooks

Almost everyone who is learning a language these days spends a large amount of time staring at screens, mostly on their smartphones and using various apps. You can also make use of a online teacher app or education app for teaching the language.

When you employ this and other new technologies to teach languages, your students will be able to use media that they are already familiar with, allowing them to immerse themselves in the language in a variety of situations.

You can gamify learning, encourage students to post on social media in the new language that they are learning, have conversations with people whose native language is the language that you are teaching, etc.

  • Proper Evaluation

Do not be tough on them. Frame the tests at an easier level and level up as they start understanding the basics properly.

Record their performance and progress and give timely feedback. Also, ensure that your feedback is detailed rather than one word.

Take practical and oral tests more than written tests so that students learn by practising instead of memorising terms.

Lastly, reward them in whichever way possible and create a healthy competition among the students.

Final Thought

Learning a new language is exciting for the learners but at the same time, they may also find it tough to grasp things easily. Hence, it is important for teachers to know the right way of teaching a language.
